The Cave and the UNESCO application

Universal nature

The painted Chauvet cave has exceptional universal value. It is a masterwork of human creative genius (a set of exceptional artwork whose age makes it very unique). It provides a unique account of a living civilisation (the first Homo sapiens civilisation in Europe). It thus perfectly fulfils UNESCO criteria. Listing the cave ensures that this treasure of humanity will be conserved and passed down to future generations.

The application concerns the painted Chauvet cave, as well as the area bordering both so-called plain of Combe d’Arc and the huge natural arch of Pont-d’Arc crossed by the river.
